Effie was my great-grandmother, the mother of my grandfather, Dan Archibald. I remember, as a preschooler, watching her from her bedroom doorway, as she let her hair down. She usually wore it up on her head but it was very long, which surprised me.

The whole family would go to her house on Sunday, after church services at the Church of Christ, for fried chicken and mashed potatoes and gravy. One Sunday one of the uncles fell asleep on the couch. I can remember my total fascination with the volume of his snoring!

To this day when I smell honeysuckle, I envision her front porch. I love that smell. I have many pictures of her taken during my baby and toddler years, but very few of her before that time. (If you have any of her that you want to share I would love to see them).

My brother Tom has the large portraits, in their original old frames, of Effie and Thomas Archibald taken on their wedding day. They are hanging on his wall in Minnesota. They hung in our house when my dad and mom lived in Oregon. Tom got them after dad died.

The story in a nutshell is this: Grandma Effie married Thomas John Archibald Jr. in a double wedding in the Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory, Oklahoma, with her sister Nora and her sister's groom Archie Walters. This is the same Archie with whom Tom had a vaudeville act at one time. It is interesting that an Archibald (last name), [often shortened to Archie] was best friends with an Archie (first name). [Note: All of the Archibald’s seem to have been called Archie at sometime in their lives. (I was ‘Archi’ for years before I got married. My friend Laurie Carr Love still calls me Archi)].

I also remember Aunt Nora, Effie’s sister. I was probably about 2 or 3 years old when we went to visit her (possibly even the day the picture below was taken). I sat on her lap and I was so scared that I sat perfectly still for what seemed like hours to me, but it was probably no more than 5 minutes. She was very nice, but to me, a toddler, I thought she was an old, scary stranger. Isn’t it funny the way a kid thinks? I wish I had known enough then to ask great-grandma and her sister questions about their lives...but I didn't even know anything about my own life yet.

Effie and her husband Tom Archibald lived in El Centro, California and then Huntington Beach, Orange, California with their three children, Dan, Curt and Elsie. Although all of them are gone now, I can still see them through the fuzzy memories of a child. I always had trouble remembering which aunt and uncle was which. I confused my Uncle Curt with Aunt Elsie's husband Fred and Aunt Elsie with Uncle Curt's wife Madge. But I clearly remember that there was a fruit tree growing in Aunt Elsie’s (or was it Aunt Madge's) backyard that had both oranges and lemons growing on it! Oh the joys of Southern California.

Effie comes from a family line that goes back to the original Lee family [through her paternal grandmother, Martha (Hanna or Anna) Lee (1820-1875) who married William Nix (1819-1875)]. William Nix was a Campbellite Preacher.

At a later time I will reveal information about the Lees. This is the Lee family that produced 'Light horse' Harry Lee and Gen. Robert E. Lee. Effie also had several ancestors’ [the Few's, and Short's] that fought in the Revolutionary War.

Our ancestor, John Nix, born 22 Feb 1611, immigrated to America during the 1600's from England. That's 400 years in America!  There is a lot of history there, waiting to be revealed. I will cover it in due time.

• Interesting note: My brother and I each have lived in Nashville in the past, not realizing that we had ancestors from there.

• Lon was one of nine children.

DOD: 22 May 1924 in Upland, California from cancer of the stomach at age 75.

Profession: He raised cattle and wheat in both Oklahoma and Texas.

DOD: 4 May 1937 in Upland, California from heart failure at age 80.

Personality: 
Quite, but if the occasion came up she could be quite fiery. She was religious and strict. She stood 5' tall and she liked to dip snuff.

They married on 4 Jan 1880 in (the exact town unknown at this time) Hunt county, Texas and lived in Weiland, Hunt, Texas and then Lone Oak, Hunt, Texas from 1880-1886. Then they lived in Navajo, Jackson, Oklahoma near Navajo Mountain. From 1898 through 1903 they lived at McAlester, Pittsburg, Oklahoma. This is where Tom's family (Effie's husband) also lived (see my article on Thomas John Archibald Sr.) Sometime in 1919 they moved to California, because of the “dust bowl” conditions in Oklahoma.

The Nixes had 11 children and when Lon's eldest sister, Frances Calfernia (Fernie) Nix Anderson died, in 1885 they took in her two children to live with them. Jeff Anderson was 17 and his sister, Willie Anderson was 7.

Effie and Tom met in McAlester, Pittsburg, Oklahoma where they both lived with their parents (per the 1900 US Census records). Effie Bertie Nix married Thomas John Archibald Jr. in a double wedding with Nora Nix and Archie Walters, on 2 Jun 1901 and their children were born in Oklahoma. The family story is that Tom & Effie moved to California because of the “dust bowl” effects in 1919, to El Centro, California. In 1922 they moved to Huntington Beach,CA . In the World War I draft registration records it says that Tom was a traveling salesman. Tom worked in the oil fields in S. CA. He died 25 Mar 1949 in California.

Physical description: balding, resembled all the Archibald men (since Thomas John Archibald Sr). He had crossed eyes all through his childhood until he was old enough to pay for his own surgery.

Bella was my great-grandmother, the mother of my mom's mom. She died when my grandma was a preschooler, about 9 months after giving birth to her second child. Her father blamed her husband for her death and they were estranged afterwards. But her death is reported to be due to TB of the bone. Could it be possible that she was also pregnant and that is why her father blamed her husband?

My mother has asked several doctors about this 'TB of the bone' and the usual answer is "there is no such thing". She did get one doctor who said that this refers to the final stages of TB. Bella was only twenty-seven when she died. From pictures I can see a strong resemblance to her daughter, my grandmother Ethel. 

She was born in Minnesota, the only daughter (with two brothers) of an immigrant, and a first generation American, from Norway. I do have about 15 pages of genealogy information about her parents and their descendants which I will share at a later time, or with anyone who asks. (cgillice@gmail.com)

Bella is one ancestor that I could have known (time-wise) if she had lived. I often wonder about what might have been. But of course, things happen and life is what it is. The following are the details for those who are interested in the actual genealogy.

2) Lewis Nestegard (1886-1950) – It is believed that he never married.  It is also believed that he was an undercover detective for the FBI or some other Federal agency? (This information is from Bernice C. Collingwood Archibald)

Things I remember about Uncle Glen:
He was a quiet man, at least when I was around him (I was only a child). When he died he was working, delivering mobile homes. He was on a trip for work and died of a heart attack sometime during the night, while in his motel room. He was traveling through Idaho at the time, but he lived in Eugene, Lane, Oregon.

I will address other members of the Nestegard/Sanderson branch of our tree at a later time.

The name Archibald and the Scottish diminutive “Archie” are from the old German name Ercanbald meaning, “genuine, bold, brave." The name was brought to Britain with the Norman conquest and is popular largely in Scotland.

Archibald is of the McPherson Clan. The Gaelic spelling for Archibald is Gilleasbuig. The Archibald (McPherson Clan) Coat of Arms is Blue, Red, Black and Grey plaid.

It was a custom to name the first son after his father and the first daughter after the wife’s mother. Therefore it is assumed that his father was also Thomas. (Assumption made by Curt and Madge Archibald). (*1)
(Note from great-great-grand-daughter Cathy: Tom is the third son, so therefore this assumption is disproved).

Thomas had 3 brothers and 2 sisters who came to America with him as teenagers.(see story below, written by his grandson Thomas Curtis). They settled in Pennsylvania and probably worked as coal miners there. Tom later moved to Oklahoma territory, which was, at that time, called Indian Territory.

Thomas John Archibald (Sr) came over from Scotland as a young man of 19 or 20 in 1868 or 69 with his siblings.(*1)  They worked their way over on a ship. Tom located in Sharon, Pennsylvania and later sent for his mother, “Annie” (Mary), at a later date (this information does not agree with the information that she came to America after 1869). They lost track of one brother (probably William) the names of the other two were David and John aka Jack.(*1)

Occupation: Tom was a coal miner in Pennsylvania and then he owned a couple of mines in the small township of Archibald, Oklahoma. Tom was the first postmaster in 1901 at age 51, the township was therefore named Archibald after him. (*1) The township of Archibald is now only a memory.

Personality: She was kind and very quiet. She was very small.

4) Mary Elizabeth Archibald (Barrett)

DOB: 4 Oct 1879  in PA

DOD: 15 May 1968   age 89

Cause of death: She fell in bathtub and never completely recovered from a head injury. *1

Personality: She was friendly but liked to run things. She had no children.

Occupation: Worked in the Masonic Home for Boys. *1

5) Anne Archibald Javins/Feeney 1

DOB: 23 Feb 1882 Indian Territory, Oklahoma

DOD: 1969  in Washington DC  age 85  died of natural causes *1

**The 1930 US Census show Anna as divorced and living with her brother Thomas and his family. It states that she was born in Ohio in about 1882 and living in Huntington Beach township at that time, and her name was Anna Javins. She was married one other time (before or after Javins is unknown to me) to a Mr. Feeney, date unknown.

Personality: very nice, “gabby” and friendly. Known as Aunt Nan to her brother Tom’s kids. *1

When Eunice died of childbirth complications after her 5^th child, Tom had to take the children to live with his sister in Pennsylvania. Eventually he took them back to Oklahoma to live, and married his second wife Molly, a one/sixteenth Choctaw Indian. 1

Second marriage and family:

Molly had been married twice before. Her first husband died young and was the father of Maude R. Wicker. Her second husband was shot and killed shortly after they were married. Molly was a good mother to her step children. She’s the only grandmother that Tom Jr’s children remembered and loved. 2

In July 1903 Thomas was adopted into the Choctaw Indian tribe because of his marriage to Molly.

written by T.C. Archibald and Madge Archibald. 

“Thomas came over from Scotland in the late 1860’s with two sisters and three brothers as teenagers. They worked their way over on a ship. Tom located in Sharon, Pennsylvania and later sent for their mother, Annie, at a later date. One sister’s name was Agnes the name of the other is unknown. Their married names were Dairyman and Hardy. They lost track of one brother. The names of the other two were David and John (Jack). The Father died in Scotland.” “Tom was married twice. His first wife, Eunice was from Wales and was very tiny (4’10”). Eunice died after her 5^th child, from childbirth complications. When this tragedy occurred Tom had to take the children to his sister’s in Pennsylvania. Eventually he took them back to Oklahoma to live and then married his second wife, Mary Ann (Molly), a one/sixthteenth Cherokee.” **2 (Note: this is an error, Molly was Choctaw.)

Interesting information about McAlester, Oklahoma:

McAlester is a city in Pittsburg County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 17,783 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Pittsburg County. It is currently the largest city in the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, followed by Durant. The town gets its name from J.J. McAlester, who later became Lt. Governor of Oklahoma and was immortalized as a character in the novel True Grit, which was then made into feature films in 1969 and 2010.

**Interesting note: Thomas Ernest Archibald, great grandson of the immigrant Thomas John Archibald, met John Wayne in the Bi-Mart store in Bend, Oregon (where he worked at the time), and John Wayne played in the movie True Grit. Small world, right?

Hannah was a strong American woman

Hannah Elizabeth Craig [Jones Collingwood]

Hannah was a strong American woman. She traveled by wagon from Utah to Oregon with her first husband Isaac Jones and their young son. They settled on Ingram Island near Monroe, Oregon. This is an area of land bordered on two sides by a large bend in the Willamette River with a creek on the other sides. Their home is no longer there, it is now a field or pasture.

My mother, Bernice, Hannah’s granddaughter, still has memories of this farm and the house they owned and then moved into after the original burned to the ground. My mother tells me that this final house was built on stilts because of a history of severe flooding of the Willamette River.

Hannah spent her childhood in Spanish Fork Utah, born into a Morman family. Her father and mother were Robert and Elizabeth Craig. She was born 2 Nov 1867, their eldest living child.

The 1880 US Census reports Hannah’s year of birth as 1867. It states she was 13 years old at that time. Her parents are listed as Robert and Elizabeth Craig, living in Spanish Fork, Utah. The household members for that Census record are listed as Robert 45, Elizabeth 36, Hannah 13, Agnes 6, Margaret 3, and William 2 months.

She had three siblings that died young, Robert A. Craig 1866-1867; James Enos Craig 1870-1871; Sarah H. Craig 1871-1873. Her living siblings were Agnes 1874 – 1924, Margaret Miller Craig 1877-1933 and William John Craig 1880-1947.

Hannah was my great grandmother and the grandmother of many of the Jones, Tolman, Collingwood and Archibald lines of our family tree. Hannah’s married names were Jones and Collingwood.

Hannah’s first husband was Isaac Jones. The record shows that Isaac Jones married Hannah Craig on 20 May 1888 in Spanish Fork, Utah, Utah. This information about their marriage was found in Utah Marriages – 1887-1966 at this website

Isaac Jones was NOT a Mormon. He came from South Wales. They were married in Spanish Fork, Utah in 1888. He was born in South Wales, UK in 1837, and although I have no date for his death, he did die before 1907 when Hannah married again. If my dates are correct then it appears that Isaac was about 50 years old when he married 20 year old Hannah. This seems about right for the times, as in those days a man had to be able to provide for a family before he married. His history is unknown by me at this time. [Was he married before? Did he have other children from a previous marriage? These are mysteries that I hope to solve. A cousin, Janet Jones (maiden name), his granddaughter may have this information. I was able to talk to Janet just a couple of nights ago, and she will be sending me more information on her family genealogy. I will update this page when I have more information.]

From this first marriage my mother’s Uncle Isaac was born. I vaguely remember Uncle Isaac from when I was a child. The funny thing is I remember the cracked sidewalk in front of their house clearly but the rest is just a shadow. I was just a child after all.

Her first son, Isaac Jones was born when she was 26 years old. No known middle name.

It appears that Isaac came by wagon with his parents when they came to Oregon. [The date of their migration is unknown by me. Do you have any further information?]

Here is an interesting thing that I do know about Hannah (from my mother’s verbal story): When Isaac Jones knew that he was dying he made arrangements for his wife to marry their farm hand, I assume to care for their son and keep the farm operating for him until he was old enough to take responsibility for it. My great-grandfather was that farm hand.

Hannah married her second husband, (the farm hand) Aaron Collingwood, in 1907. They married in Lane Co. Oregon. Aaron’s granddaughter Bernice (my mother) states that he had no middle name. [Does anyone have any different information?] Aaron was a widower. His first wife, Eliza was born 20 May 1858 in Canada, and died 2 Oct 1904 in Lane County, OR. The cause of her death is unknown, as is the date of their marriage and if they had children.

Aaron Collingwood was born 3 Jun 1847 in Rockland, Venango, Pennsylvania, USA. He was 61 years old when his son William was born and Hannah was about 39 to 41 years old (there are differences in the data). Bill was still a boy when Aaron died, 22 Feb 1923 in the Santa Clara area of Eugene, Lane, Oregon, USA.

Their son’s information is as follows: William Aaron Collingwood, DOB 7 Sep 1908 (probably at home on the farm on Ingram Island) in Lane county, Oregon. His DOD was 7 Jun 1970 in Portland, Clackamas Co, Oregon. He was known as Bill to many.

The 1880 US Census shows Hannah living in Spanish Fork, Utah with her parents. The 1900 US Census shows her living in Irving, Oregon. The 1920 and 1930 US Census’ shows her living in Lone Pine, Oregon.

Hannah died in her home in Lane County Oregon on 18 Oct, 1933.  Hannah is buried in the Eugene Pioneer Cemetery  blk 229  plot # is unknown.  Information can be found on http://www.eugenepioneercemetery.org/
